Chapter 6 - Following the Money

"We can't just run," Marcus told Huck as they packed their gear into Huck's battered pickup truck. "As long as Miller has a badge, he’ll hunt Leo. We strike tonight."

They left Leo with Huck's sister, a trauma nurse who lived off the grid in a neighboring county. For the first time in 48 hours, Marcus felt the suffocating weight of protecting his son lift, replaced by a cold, singular focus: vengeance.

Under the cover of darkness, Marcus and Huck infiltrated the pristine, gated community of Cedar Pines. The neighborhood was quiet, the manicured lawns bathed in moonlight. The community center was a massive, fortress-like building in the center of the development.

Two patrol cars were parked out front. Miller’s men.

Huck tossed a smoke grenade into the guard booth while Marcus scaled the side of the building, slipping through a second-story ventilation shaft. He dropped silently into the main office.

The safe was hidden behind a portrait of the HOA board. Marcus pulled a thermal drill from his pack. It took ten agonizing minutes to melt through the locking mechanism. When the heavy door swung open, Marcus found exactly what he was looking for: stacks of bearer bonds, cartel ledgers, and a hard drive containing the offshore account data.

He shoved it all into his duffel bag. But as he turned to leave, the office lights flickered on.
