Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Gate

On Wednesday morning, I was sitting on the shaded patio of my home, watching Mia swim in the pool with the golden retriever puppy I had adopted for her on Tuesday.

The peaceful morning was shattered by the sharp, persistent buzzing of the intercom system connected to the security gate at the entrance of my property.

I walked over to the wall monitor in the kitchen and saw my father’s silver sedan idling in the driveway, with Monica and my mother standing at the wrought-iron gate.

Monica was pressing the buzzer repeatedly, her face contorted with anger as she peered through the bars toward the front door of my house.

I pressed the talk button on the console, my voice projecting clearly through the outdoor speaker above the gate without me ever stepping outside.

"You are trespassing on private property, Monica," I said calmly, watching her jump at the sudden sound of my voice echoing across the driveway.

"Rachel! Open this gate right now!" she screamed, gripping the iron bars like a prisoner. "Greg is facing federal wire fraud charges because of the lies you told Arthur!"

My mother stepped forward, crying genuine tears of panic now that the consequences of their cruelty had finally arrived at their own bank accounts.

"Rachel, darling, please don't do this to your sister," my mother pleaded toward the camera lens. "We are family, and we have to stick together when things get tough!"

"Where was that family unity when Mia was pounding on your hotel door until her throat bled, Mom?" I asked, my voice dropping an octave into an icy register.

"You told her that only real family belonged inside that room, and I simply took your words to heart and adjusted my life accordingly."

My father stepped out of the driver's seat, shouting toward the speaker that I was a vindictive, ungrateful daughter who was destroying her own blood over a minor misunderstanding.

I didn't argue or try to explain my feelings; I simply pressed a secondary button on the console that connected directly to the local police department's dispatch desk.

"I have three trespassers refusing to leave my gated driveway, and I would like to request an immediate patrol unit to issue formal criminal trespass warnings," I stated clearly.
