Chapter 3 - The Security Footage

At ten o'clock, my phone rang with a restricted number, and I answered immediately, recognizing the gravelly voice of Marcus Vance, the Clearwater resort’s director of security.
I had spoken to Marcus the previous evening before leaving the property, formally requesting an internal investigation into the incident occurring on the fourth floor.
"Mrs. Sterling, I have personally reviewed the high-definition corridor cameras from yesterday afternoon, and I need to apologize on behalf of the resort," Marcus said gravely.
He confirmed that the footage clearly showed Monica opening the connecting door, looking directly down at a sobbing Mia, and uttering the words that had broken my heart.
Even worse, the security cameras captured my mother stepping out into the hallway fifteen minutes later to retrieve a bucket of ice from the alcove machine.
She had literally stepped around her crying granddaughter, ignored Mia's pleas for her mommy, and walked back into the suite with her ice bucket without batting an eye.
"We have archived the footage and flagged the remaining guests in Room 412 for immediate administrative eviction due to child endangerment and disturbing the peace," Marcus informed me.
I thanked him for his professionalism and requested that a certified digital copy of the security recording be transferred directly to my legal counsel in Tampa.
Twenty minutes later, while I was helping Mia apply sunscreen by the private resort pool, my laptop chimed with an urgent incoming email from Arthur Pendelton.
The message contained only two lines: Rachel, I am currently freezing all corporate accounts and contacting the FBI financial crimes division. Where can we meet to discuss your equity protection?
I smiled at my reflection in the dark screen of my tablet, feeling the first satisfying weight of justice shifting in our direction.

While Monica was likely still lounging by the Clearwater resort pool on my canceled credit card, her husband's empire was being dismantled brick by fraudulent brick.
They had wanted a vacation exclusively for real family, and by noon today, they were going to learn exactly how expensive isolation could be.
