Chapter 6 - The Emergency Family Council

By Tuesday evening, my parents’ home in suburban Tampa had transformed into a frantic war room where my family desperately tried to contain the expanding disaster.
My phone remained completely silent because I had changed my number that very morning, routing all communication through my legal counsel’s downtown office.
Unable to reach me to demand my compliance, my mother called my late husband Thomas’s brother, David, hoping to use my in-laws to pressure me into submission.
She spun a horrific tale, claiming that grief had finally driven me insane and that I was actively trying to destroy Greg’s business out of jealous spite.
David, who had remained a steadfast protector of Mia and me since Thomas’s death, listened to my mother’s hysterical rant without interrupting her once.
When she finally paused for breath, demanding that David intervene and force me to release Greg’s frozen assets, my brother-in-law let out a dry, chilling laugh.
"Mrs. Bennett, Rachel sent me the Clearwater resort security footage on Saturday morning before she even checked out of her new hotel," David said coldly over the line.
"I watched your grown daughter leave my seven-year-old niece crying in a freezing hallway for three hours while you sat inside drinking white wine."
He warned my mother that if anyone from the Bennett family ever attempted to approach Mia or Rachel again, he would personally fund the civil lawsuits against them.
My mother slammed the phone down in tears, turning to my father and Monica, who were sitting around the kitchen table surrounded by unpaid legal notices.
Greg was pacing the living room with a glass of scotch, his phone ringing incessantly with calls from nervous creditors and angry investors who had heard rumors of the audit.

"We have to go to her house," Monica declared, her face blotchy from crying as she grabbed her car keys off the granite counter.
"If Mom and Dad cry, Rachel will cave; she always caves when we remind her that we’re the only family Mia has left!"
