Chapter 4 - The Eviction

At exactly one o'clock in the afternoon, while the Florida sun was beating down on the coast, three resort security officers accompanied the front desk manager to Room 412.

According to the text message I later received from Marcus Vance, my mother opened the door wearing a plush hotel robe, expecting a complimentary bottle of champagne.

Instead, she was handed a formal notice of immediate eviction, citing severe violations of guest conduct and child safety protocols documented on surveillance video.

Monica apparently threw a massive tantrum in the hallway, screaming that her sister was paying for the suite and demanding to speak to the general manager immediately.

When the manager informed them that my credit card on file had been canceled and withdrawn from their room folio, Greg attempted to hand over his corporate platinum card.

The transaction was declined twice at the portable wireless terminal, sending Greg into a panicked frenzy as he frantically tried to access his online banking app.

He discovered that every single account associated with Pendelton & Associates had been administratively frozen pending a forensic internal audit by the managing partners.

They were given exactly forty-five minutes to pack their designer luggage, gather their unruly children, and vacate the property under the watchful eyes of uniformed security.

Because I had driven the rental SUV away the night before, they were forced to drag six heavy suitcases down the hot asphalt driveway to wait for a local taxi.

My father attempted to call my cell phone from the resort lobby's courtesy line, leaving a voicemail that swung wildly between parental guilt trips and outright fury.

"Rachel, you have humiliated us in front of the entire hotel staff, and your sister is crying hysterically in the parking lot," his recorded voice boomed through my speaker.

"You bring that vehicle back here right now and pay this hotel bill, or you can forget about ever coming to Thanksgiving dinner again!"

I deleted the voicemail with a flick of my thumb, grabbed Mia's hand, and walked down to the beach to build sandcastles in the afternoon sun.
