Chapter 1 - The Midnight Escape

The boutique hotel room was quiet, save for the rhythmic humming of the air conditioning unit and the soft breathing of my daughter.
Mia lay curled beneath the crisp white duvet, her small arms wrapped tightly around her worn stuffed bear, her chest rising and falling in an exhausted slumber.
I stood by the window in the dark, watching the moonlight dance across the Gulf waves while my heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs.
My own family had looked into the tear-stained face of a seven-year-old girl and locked a heavy wooden door between her and safety.
Monica had dared to say that only real family belonged inside that suite, dismissing the niece who had looked up to her since birth.
She had forgotten that I was the one holding the keys to the kingdom she so arrogantly ruled.
When Thomas died in that refinery explosion three years ago, the corporation settled out of court for a sum that made my parents gasp when the paperwork was finalized.
They thought the money made me soft, a grieving widow who would happily fund their dinners, their vacations, and their endless demands just to buy their affection.
They never realized that grief had stripped away my tolerance for manipulation, leaving behind a cold, unyielding armor that was about to be tested.
My phone buzzed silently on the glass coffee table, illuminating the dark room with a string of angry text messages from my mother.
She demanded to know why I had taken the rental SUV without leaving the keys at the front desk for your father to use in the morning.
There was not a single message asking if Mia had stopped crying, or if her bare feet were bruised from the cold concrete stairwell.

I unlocked the screen, took a deep breath, and blocked my mother’s number, followed by my father’s, and then Monica’s.
Tomorrow, the storm would make landfall, but tonight, I needed to protect the only real family I had left in this world.
