Chapter 9 - Robert's Confession

The next day, it was Robert's turn to take the stand.
Watching my ex-husband walk to the witness box was like watching a ghost drift through the room.
He looked broken, his former arrogance completely stripped away by the sheer magnitude of his failures.
The prosecutor wasted no time diving into the heart of the betrayal.
"Mr. Sterling, when your son accused your wife of stealing the trust funds, did you verify his claims?" Harrison asked.
Robert stared down at his hands, his voice barely a whisper when he answered.
"No, I did not."
"Why not?" Harrison pressed, leaning on the podium.
"Because I loved him," Robert choked out, a single tear escaping his eye.
"I trusted him implicitly. I thought he was protecting me."
"And because of that trust, you threw your wife out into a blizzard with no coat, no keys, and no phone?"
Robert buried his face in his hands, completely breaking down on the stand.
"Yes. I did it. It is the greatest regret of my life."
The defense attorney tried to cross-examine him, attempting to paint Robert as an abusive father who had driven Julian to desperation.
But Robert wasn't fighting back anymore.
He agreed with every harsh thing the defense said about him, admitting his failures as a father and a husband.
His complete surrender completely derailed the defense's strategy.
Julian sat at the defense table, his face turning a dark shade of red as he watched his father publicly self-destruct.
