Chapter 2 - The Aftermath

The morning light filtering through the hospital blinds felt harsh and unforgiving.

I woke up to the agonizing sensation of my nerves trying to fire through the damaged tissue in my hands.

A nurse was gently changing my bandages, her eyes full of quiet sympathy.

Robert had been forcibly removed from the hospital the night before by hospital security after refusing to leave my side.

I felt a dark sense of satisfaction knowing he was out there, alone with his guilt.

Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator with sharp eyes, walked into my room holding a notepad.

"Good morning, Mrs. Sterling," he said gently, pulling up a chair next to my bed.

"I need to ask you some questions about Julian and the events leading up to last night."

I took a deep breath, pushing past the pain, and told him everything.

I detailed the locked cabinets, the sudden influx of mail Julian intercepted, and the chilling way he had manipulated his father.

The detective took meticulous notes, his jaw tightening with every horrific detail I shared.

"Your husband brought us the satchel Julian left behind," Detective Miller informed me.

"Julian didn't just drain the inheritance trust; he took out three massive loans in your husband's name."

"He also maxed out every credit card linked to the estate."

The sheer scale of Julian's deception was staggering, even to me.

He had destroyed his father's financial empire in a matter of weeks.

"Where is Julian now?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

"He's in the wind," the detective replied with a heavy sigh.

"He took your husband's Mercedes and cleared out the remaining liquid cash from the joint checking account."

"But don't worry, we have a warrant out for his arrest."

I looked at my heavily bandaged hands, the reality of my new life sinking in.

I was broken, battered, and betrayed, but I was still breathing.

Julian thought he had destroyed me, but he had only awakened a strength I never knew I possessed.
