Chapter 19 - The Final Severance
In the spring, I received a final, unexpected piece of mail regarding the Sterling family.
It was a legal notice from the state penitentiary.
Julian had been involved in a violent altercation with another inmate over gambling debts inside the prison.
He had been severely beaten and was facing additional time added to his sentence for his involvement in the contraband ring.
I read the notice with complete detachment.
He was continuing his cycle of destruction, unable to learn or grow even behind bars.
I forwarded the notice to Robert's last known address, knowing he was the only one who still cared about Julian's fate.
It was the last piece of paperwork connecting me to the Sterling name.
The next day, I drove to the county courthouse and legally changed my last name back to my maiden name, Harper.
Walking out of the courthouse as Elena Harper felt like a rebirth.
I was completely untethered from the men who had tried to ruin me.
I celebrated by taking Sarah out to a lavish lunch, ordering champagne and toasting to the future.
"To Elena Harper," Sarah cheered, clinking her glass against mine.
"Long may she reign."
I laughed, a genuine, joyful sound that bubbled up from the bottom of my heart.
My shelter fund was thriving, my garden was blooming, and my home was a sanctuary of peace.
