Chapter 5 - The Downward Spiral

Weeks turned into a month, and the harsh winter began to thaw into a miserable, muddy spring.
Robert's life continued to unravel at a terrifying pace.
Without the stolen trust funds and with the massive debt Julian had accumulated, Robert’s business went under.
He was forced to file for bankruptcy, his reputation in the community completely destroyed by the scandal.
Mutual friends who had once attended our lavish dinner parties now pretended they didn't know him at the grocery store.
I watched it all happen from a distance, feeling a strange mix of pity and profound vindication.
My hands were slowly healing, though I still wore protective gloves to hide the ugly, discolored scarring.
Sarah was my rock, helping me navigate the legal paperwork and the endless doctor appointments.
One evening, Detective Miller called with a major breakthrough in the case.
"We got a hit on one of the burner credit cards Julian took," he announced over the phone.
"Where?" I asked, my heart pounding in my chest.
"Las Vegas," the detective replied.
"He's been bouncing between high-end casinos, trying to launder the stolen cash through the VIP tables."
A grim smile spread across my face.
Julian was arrogant, but he wasn't as smart as he thought he was.
He couldn't resist the allure of the high life, and it was going to be his downfall.
"We have agents coordinating with casino security as we speak," Miller assured me.
"It's only a matter of time now, Elena."
I hung up the phone and walked over to the window, watching the rain wash away the last of the snow.

The trap was closing.
Julian was about to learn that you can't outrun your sins forever, especially when they leave a trail of broken lives behind.
