Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth

The steady beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in the sterile emergency room.
Robert stood frozen in the doorway, his eyes locked on my blackened hands.
He took a trembling step forward, his expensive wool coat looking entirely out of place in the sterile environment.
"Elena," he choked out, his voice thick with unshed tears.
I turned my head away, unable to look at the man who had sentenced me to freeze to death.
The state trooper who had called him stood by the window, his expression grim and unforgiving.
"Mr. Sterling, you need to step back," the trooper ordered, placing a firm hand on Robert's shoulder.
Robert ignored him, falling to his knees beside my hospital bed.
"I saw the satchel, Elena," he sobbed, burying his face in the pristine white sheets.
"I saw the forged documents and the mortgage applications."
"He set you up, and I believed him."
I wanted to pull my hand away from him, but the frostbite had rendered my fingers completely numb.
The physical pain was excruciating, but it paled in comparison to the betrayal shattering my heart.
"You didn't just believe him, Robert," I whispered, my throat raw from the freezing air.
"You threw me out into a blizzard without a second thought."
"You looked me in the eyes and told me to get off your property."
Robert flinched as if I had struck him across the face.
He knew there were no words in the English language that could undo what he had done.
The doctor walked into the room, his face etched with deep concern.
"Mrs. Sterling, we are doing everything we can to save your fingers, but the tissue damage is severe," he explained softly.
Robert let out a pathetic wail, finally realizing the permanent physical cost of his blind trust.

I stared at the ceiling, feeling a cold resolve wash over me that had nothing to do with the winter storm outside.
My marriage was dead, and I was going to make sure both Robert and Julian paid for every single thing they had done to me.
