Chapter 11 - The Sentencing

A month later, we returned to the courthouse for the official sentencing hearing.

Julian looked completely defeated, the reality of his prolonged incarceration finally setting in.

The judge showed absolutely no leniency to the privileged young man who had caused so much destruction.

"Julian Sterling, your crimes were not born of necessity, but of pure greed and malice," the judge stated sternly.

"You orchestrated a callous scheme that not only bankrupted your father but nearly killed your stepmother."

"For these heinous acts, I sentence you to fifteen years in federal prison, without the possibility of early parole."

Julian let out a strangled cry as the bailiffs moved in to cuff him.

Fifteen years.

He would be almost forty years old by the time he saw the outside world again.

His youth, his wealth, and his arrogance had all been stripped away, leaving nothing but an inmate number.

I walked out of the courthouse feeling a profound sense of lightness.

The sun was shining brightly, the harsh winter finally a distant memory.

I saw Robert standing near the courthouse steps, looking like he wanted to approach me.

I stopped and looked at him, offering a small, sad nod of acknowledgment.

He nodded back, tears in his eyes, before turning and walking away toward the bus stop.

He didn't even have a car anymore.

His punishment was living the rest of his life with the guilt of what he had done to me, and what his blind trust had done to his son.

I got into my sister's car, ready to finally start putting the pieces of my life back together.

The past was buried, and the future was entirely mine to build.
