Chapter 8 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than three hours.

The courtroom was dead silent as the foreman stood up and handed the slip of paper to the bailiff.

"On the counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Federal Wire Fraud, Forgery, and Conspiracy to Commit Murder... we find the defendant, David Kensington, Guilty on all charges."

David dropped his head onto the defense table, his shoulders shaking as he finally broke down.

The judge, a stern man with zero tolerance for white-collar predators, looked down from the bench with absolute disgust.

"Mr. Kensington," the judge said, his voice echoing in the grand room. "You used the trust of your community, your wife, and your family to mask a sociopathic greed. You viewed human life as nothing more than a real estate obstacle. It is the duty of this court to ensure you never have the opportunity to victimize anyone ever again."

David was sentenced to forty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of early parole.

He was handcuffed and dragged out of the courtroom. He didn't look at me as he passed. He knew better.
