Chapter 7 - The Trial

Seven months later, the federal trial commenced.

David sat at the defense table looking like a ghost. He had lost weight, his hair was graying, and the tailored suits he loved so much hung off him like cheap drapes.

The prosecution was ruthless. They played the hidden camera footage from my mother's kitchen. The courtroom gasped as they watched the "gentle community man" swing a golf club at a defenseless elderly woman.

Then came the financial evidence. The forged signatures. The massive insurance policies.

But the final nail in the coffin was Chloe.

His mistress took the stand, wearing a conservative gray suit. She looked directly at the jury and detailed exactly how David had plotted to clear the land by orchestrating my mother's "accidental" death. She handed over text messages, emails, and recorded voicemails.

When David’s attorney tried to cross-examine my mother, hoping to paint her as confused or senile, Martha sat tall in the witness box.

"I am sixty-eight, counselor, not dead," my mother said sharply, adjusting her new glasses. "I know exactly who swung that club. And I know exactly why he did it."

The defense rested without calling a single witness. They had nothing.
