Chapter 3 - The Interrogation

I didn't take the documents to the local police. Local cops can be charmed. A man with David's smile and community ties could spin a story about misunderstandings or financial planning.

I took the documents to my commanding officer at the Naval base, who immediately connected me with the FBI's financial crimes division.

By noon, David was sitting in a federal interrogation room.

I watched from behind the two-way mirror as two federal agents walked in. David looked disheveled, but he still wore his practiced, innocent mask.

"I don't understand why I'm here," David said smoothly, running a hand through his hair. "It was a domestic dispute. My mother-in-law had a mental break. I was just defending myself."

The lead agent, a hardened man named Reynolds, didn't smile. He tossed a thick manila folder onto the metal table.

"We aren't here about the assault, Mr. Kensington," Reynolds said coldly. "We're here about the wire fraud, the forged deeds, and the $4.5 million in unauthorized life insurance policies you initiated across state lines."

David’s face went completely slack. The color drained from his cheeks until he looked like a corpse.

"Your wife cracked your safe, David," the agent continued, pointing at the mirror. "She handed us the shell company routing numbers. We’ve already frozen the accounts."

Behind the glass, I watched the man I had slept next to for fourteen years completely shatter.
