Chapter 5 - The Bail Out

Despite the overwhelming evidence, David’s high-priced defense attorney managed to secure bail pending the federal trial, citing his "immaculate community record."

David was released with an ankle monitor and strict orders to stay away from me and my mother.

But narcissists never believe they have actually lost.

Two days after his release, David showed up at the hospital. He bypassed the front desk and managed to slip into the post-op recovery wing where my mother was resting after having her collarbone surgically pinned.

I was sitting in the corner chair, hidden in the shadows of the dim hospital room, when the door creaked open.

David stepped inside. He looked manic, his eyes wild, his usual polished veneer entirely gone. He approached the bed, looking down at my sleeping mother.

"You ruined everything, you old bat," he hissed, reaching out toward her oxygen tube.

"Take one more step, David, and I will put you through the wall," I said from the darkness.

David jumped back, whirling around to face me. He looked at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You think you've won, Elena?" he spat. "My lawyers will tear her apart on the stand. They'll say she has dementia. They'll say the safe was yours, and you framed me to steal the property yourself."

I stood up slowly, stepping into the fluorescent light.

"You really think a Navy Commander leaves anything to chance?" I asked softly. I pointed to the small, blinking red light on the bedside monitor. "This entire room is wired, David. You just violated a federal restraining order and verbally admitted your motive on tape. Your bail is officially revoked."

Within sixty seconds, hospital security and two federal marshals burst into the room, tackling David to the linoleum floor.
