Chapter 4 - The Mistress

You don't orchestrate a $12 million commercial real estate fraud without an inside connection.

While the FBI tore through David’s electronics, I did my own digging. I hired a private investigator to look into the notary who had stamped the forged deeds.

Her name was Chloe Vance. She was a thirty-two-year-old luxury real estate broker in Virginia Beach.

And, as the investigator's photographs quickly proved, she was also David’s mistress. Pictures showed them dining at high-end restaurants, entering boutique hotels, and celebrating with champagne on a yacht David claimed he had "rented for a charity event."

David hadn't just planned to kill my mother and steal her land. He had planned to take the money, divorce me, and build a new empire with his mistress.

I drove to Chloe’s high-end brokerage firm downtown. I didn't wear civilian clothes. I wore my full Navy dress uniform, ribbons and all.

When I walked into her glass-walled office, Chloe looked up and froze. She knew exactly who I was.

"Mrs. Kensington," she stammered, standing up nervously.

I locked the glass door behind me and dropped the investigator's file onto her pristine marble desk.

"The FBI is currently drafting indictments for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and real estate embezzlement," I said, my voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "David is looking at thirty years in federal prison. You notarized the forged deeds, Chloe. Which means you are looking at twenty."

Chloe burst into tears, her manicured hands covering her face.

"I can make a phone call right now and have the marshals drag you out of this lobby," I continued. "Or, you can turn state's witness, hand over every email he ever sent you, and testify against him in court."

Chloe didn't even hesitate. She flipped on David immediately.
