Chapter 9 - The Eviction

Arthur stood completely still on the porch until Richard finally placed the heavy brass keys into his outstretched palm.

"The movers already took the last of the boxes this morning," Richard mumbled, looking firmly at the ground.

"Make sure you lock the gate on your way out," Arthur said, turning his back on them without a single ounce of hesitation.

He walked back to his SUV, climbed into the driver's seat, and started the powerful engine.

As he drove away, he looked in the rearview mirror and saw Richard and Margaret dragging their suitcases down the long driveway.

They looked small, pathetic, and entirely powerless, stripped of the unearned arrogance that had defined their entire lives.

"Dad, what is going to happen to them now?" Leo asked from the backseat, his voice filled with genuine curiosity rather than sadness.

"They are going to have to learn how to live like normal people, buddy," Arthur replied, smiling warmly at his son in the mirror.

"They are going to have to get jobs, clean their own dishes, and realize that money doesn't make you better than anyone else."

Finn giggled, tossing a cookie crumb at his older brother.

"Do you think Grandma knows how to clean a sticky chair?" Finn joked playfully.

Arthur laughed out loud, the deep, genuine sound completely filling the spacious interior of the car.

"I think she is going to learn very quickly, Finn," Arthur smiled.

He drove them straight to their favorite amusement park, entirely ignoring his business emails for the rest of the day.

He bought them massive clouds of pink cotton candy, rode the terrifying rollercoasters, and won a giant stuffed bear for Lily.
