Chapter 1 - The Paper Trail

The silence on the terrace was deafening as the crystal shards of champagne glasses settled on the stone floor.

Richard gasped for air, his expensive tuxedo soaked in expensive alcohol, while Margaret stared at Arthur in absolute horror.

Arthur did not lower the crumpled receipt in his hand.

He held it high so that every wealthy guest, every snickering cousin, and every silent waiter could see the bold black ink.

"You told everyone here that you generously sponsored this luxurious anniversary gala," Arthur said, his voice echoing across the quiet courtyard.

"You bragged about the caviar, the string quartet, and the imported floral arrangements."

"But the truth is, Richard’s company is entirely bankrupt, and his credit cards were declined three weeks ago."

A collective gasp ripped through the crowd of high-society elites.

Margaret’s face turned an ugly shade of crimson as she stepped forward, desperately trying to snatch the paper from Arthur’s hand.

"Arthur, stop this nonsense right now before you ruin our reputation!" she hissed through her teeth.

"You ruined your own reputation the second you decided my children were fit to be your unpaid servants," Arthur replied coldly, stepping out of her reach.

He turned to the venue manager, a man who had been watching the scene unfold with wide eyes.

"Mr. Sterling, as the person who actually signed the contract and paid the fifty-thousand-dollar invoice, I am exercising my right as the host."

"I want Richard, Margaret, and their entire side of the family escorted off my property immediately."

Richard scrambled to his feet, slipping slightly on the champagne-soaked tiles.

"You cannot kick us out of our own anniversary party!" Richard roared, his face purple with rage and humiliation.

"Watch me," Arthur said softly, his eyes completely devoid of any familial warmth.

The security guards, who knew exactly whose name was on the checks, immediately stepped forward and grabbed Richard by the arms.
