Chapter 9 - The Sentencing

The trial was a media spectacle, but it was over before it truly began.
Faced with the mountain of forensic evidence Elena had gathered, Marcus and Cynthia’s high-priced lawyers advised them to take a plea deal.
I sat in the front row of the federal courtroom on the day of their sentencing.
Cynthia looked hollow. Her hair was unkempt, her makeup absent. The glamorous socialite was gone, replaced by a terrified woman facing the reality of a concrete cell. Marcus stared at the floor, his arrogance entirely broken.
The judge looked down from the bench with absolute disgust.
"Marcus Thorne and Cynthia Sterling," the judge stated, his voice echoing through the silent room. "Your conspiracy to defraud Richard Sterling and the shareholders of his company represents corporate greed at its most malicious. You ruined lives for your own vanity."
The judge slammed his gavel.
"Marcus Thorne, I sentence you to twenty years in federal prison. Cynthia Sterling, you are sentenced to fifteen years, without the possibility of parole."

I didn't gloat. I didn't smirk. I just gave her a slow, final nod, and watched the doors close behind her.
