Chapter 5 - The Gala of Lies

With the cryptographic key in hand, Vance began the digital siege.
While he worked, it was time to rattle the cage. Cynthia and Marcus were hosting a massive charity gala at the Biltmore Hotel—a victory lap disguised as philanthropy. They were celebrating their engagement.
I didn't sneak into the gala. I walked right through the front doors.
I was wearing a pristine, custom-tailored Tom Ford tuxedo, purchased with the cash from the duffel bag. Elena walked beside me, wearing a stunning black evening gown, looking every bit the lethal, brilliant woman she truly was.
The ballroom went dead silent as we walked down the grand staircase.
Billionaires, politicians, and socialites parted like the Red Sea. They stared at me as if a ghost had just walked into the room.
At the center of the ballroom, Cynthia dropped her champagne flute. It shattered against the marble. Marcus Thorne’s fake, politician smile completely vanished.
"Richard," Marcus sneered, recovering quickly and stepping in front of Cynthia. "You have a lot of nerve showing your face here. Security!"
"Don't bother," I said loudly, ensuring the entire room could hear. "I bought the security team for the night. They answer to me."
Cynthia stepped forward, her eyes flashing with venom. "You are pathetic, Richard. A broke, desperate old man crashing a party to beg for scraps. Get out before I have you arrested for stalking."
I smiled. A genuine, terrifying smile.
"I didn't come to beg, Cynthia," I said smoothly. I reached into my jacket and pulled out a single sheet of paper. It was a printed screenshot of the Cayman account balances. I handed it to her.
Cynthia looked down. Her face instantly lost all its color.
"Check your phone, Marcus," I whispered.
May you like
Marcus pulled out his phone. His jaw dropped.
"Enjoy the party," I said, turning on my heel. "Because it's the last one you'll ever afford."
