Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Machine

We waited in the pitch-black steel box for four hours.

Above us, we heard the men tearing my home to shreds. They smashed drywall, flipped furniture, and screamed at each other when they realized the mountain of cash was gone.

Finally, the house fell dead silent.

Elena tapped her phone screen. "They’re gone. But they’ll be watching the perimeter. We leave through the servant’s passage that leads to the storm drains."

An hour later, we were sitting in a cheap, neon-lit motel room on the outskirts of the Valley. I dropped the heavy duffel bag on the stained carpet. I unzipped it. It was packed to the brim with banded hundred-dollar bills.

"There's at least three million dollars in here," I whispered.

"Three point two," Elena corrected, sitting on the edge of the bed and pulling out the silver hard drive. "It was petty cash for their bribes. The real money—your two hundred million—is locked in an offshore trust in the Caymans. But Cynthia made one catastrophic mistake."

I looked at the woman who had scrubbed my toilets for over a decade. Her posture was completely different. The subservient maid was gone. In her place was a brilliant, calculating tactician.

"Who are you, Elena?" I asked.

"I was a forensic accountant in Mexico City," she said quietly. "Until a cartel forced me to clean their books. When I refused, they burned my firm to the ground. I fled here. I became a ghost to survive. I took a job cleaning your house because it was safe. But when your wife started bringing home men in suits who smelled like offshore shell companies, I knew exactly what she was doing."

She handed me the hard drive.

"I cloned Cynthia’s laptop the week before she left," Elena said. "I have the routing numbers. I have the fake vendor invoices. I have the recorded phone calls between Marcus and your board members. But we can't go to the regular police. Marcus owns them."

"Then what do we do?" I asked, feeling a spark of fire ignite in my chest for the first time in a year.

"We buy a bigger gun," Elena smiled. "Do you remember Arthur Vance?"
