Chapter 1 - The False Badge

The red and blue lights strobed violently through the sheer curtains of the guest bedroom, painting the stacks of cash in a chaotic, bloody hue.

My heart slammed against my ribs. "The police? Elena, we have the evidence. We can show them—"

"They aren’t here to arrest you, Mr. Sterling," Elena interrupted, her voice entirely devoid of panic. She swiftly zipped a heavy canvas duffel bag shut. "Think about it. Cynthia and Marcus set you up to be out of the house tonight. They sent someone to retrieve the money. When they realized you came home early, they sent the cleaners."

I stared at her, my mind struggling to process the sheer weight of the betrayal. "Cleaners?"

"Dirty cops on Marcus’s payroll," she said, shoving the duffel bag into my chest. It weighed at least forty pounds. "They aren’t here to read you your rights. They are here to make sure you resist arrest so they have an excuse to shoot you."

Heavy fists pounded against the front door downstairs.

"Open up! LAPD! We have a warrant!"

"Elena, how do you know all this?" I gasped.

"Fourteen years of dusting around Marcus Thorne’s drunken poker games," she said, grabbing a sleek silver hard drive off the bed and sliding it into her apron. "Now move. The panic room."

"I don't have a panic room."

"Your wife built one six months before she left you. She used it to store the physical cash before laundering it." Elena grabbed my wrist and dragged me toward the back of the walk-in closet.

The front door splintered with a deafening crash. Heavy combat boots hit the marble foyer.

Elena reached behind a row of winter coats, pressed a hidden sequence into the cedar paneling, and a heavy steel door clicked open. We slipped inside into total darkness just as heavy footsteps pounded up the grand staircase.

"Tear the place apart!" a gruff voice barked from my bedroom. "Thorne said the cash is in the guest suite! Find Sterling and put him down!"

I clamped my hand over my mouth, the reality of my new existence setting in. I wasn't just a ruined man anymore. I was a hunted one.
