Chapter 8 - The Matriarch's Fall

Victoria Blackwood was the last to be brought out. Even in handcuffs, she held her chin high, clinging to the delusion of her own supremacy.

She spotted David and spat on the grass. "This is a temporary setback. We own the judges in this state. We'll be out on bail by midnight, and then I will make you beg for mercy."

David pulled a small digital recorder from his tactical vest. He pressed play, maximizing the volume.

“Caleb says if you’re stupid enough to come hunting for him, he’ll finish what he started with her.” Victoria's own voice echoed across the lawn.

"That's a recorded threat of physical violence against a minor, crossing state lines, Mrs. Blackwood," the lead FBI agent said, his face a mask of disgust. "That bumps your charges up to federal extortion and witness tampering. Bail is denied."

Victoria’s haughty expression crumbled into absolute horror. As they shoved her into the back of the transport van, David leaned in.

"You thought love meant ownership," David whispered. "But a father's love means war. Enjoy the cage."
