Chapter 10 - Dawn in the Desert

One year later.

The sun was setting over a quiet, beautiful suburb outside of San Antonio, Texas. David had retired from active duty, trading his combat boots for a civilian security consulting firm that allowed him to work from home.

The sliding glass door to the patio opened, and Maya walked out.

She had a slight limp, a permanent reminder of the nightmare, but her cast was gone. More importantly, the light had returned to her eyes. She was holding a school textbook and laughing at a joke made by the teenage girl walking beside her.

Chloe had been formally adopted by David. She was thriving in a new high school, far away from the toxic poison of her bloodline.

"Dad!" Maya called out, running awkwardly but happily across the grass. "Chloe helped me finish my science project! Can we get pizza to celebrate?"

David knelt down, catching his daughter in a tight embrace, burying his face in her hair. He felt her steady heartbeat against his chest.

"Yeah, kiddo," David smiled, looking up at Chloe with profound gratitude. "We can get all the pizza you want."

Miles away, in a cold, concrete cell, the Blackwoods sat in absolute silence, stripped of their power, their money, and their pride. But in the warm Texas twilight, David Thorne sat at a table with his two girls, surrounded by love, safety, and a peace that could never be broken.
