Chapter 2 - The Sheriff's Downfall

Chief of Police Robert Miller felt untouchable. He had spent fifteen years covering up Blackwood DUIs, assaults, and embezzlement in exchange for a fat offshore bank account.
On Thursday evening, Miller was sitting in his cruiser behind the local diner, eating a burger, when his police radio dissolved into static.
His personal cell phone rang. It was an unknown number. "Enjoying the burger, Robert?" a calm, deep voice asked.
Miller sat up straight. "Who is this?"
"Check your email," David replied.
Miller opened his phone. Sitting in his inbox was a complete, unredacted history of his offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, paired with audio recordings of him accepting bribes from Harrison Blackwood to ignore a fatal mining accident three years prior.
"I just sent that file to the FBI Field Office in Richmond, the State Police, and every local news station within two hundred miles," David said smoothly. "You have about five minutes before the state troopers cross the county line."

Panic seized Miller. He dropped his burger, threw the cruiser into drive, and tried to speed out of town. But a black SUV pulled out from an alley, neatly blocking his path. Three state police cruisers with sirens blaring boxed him in from behind.
As Miller was dragged from his car and handcuffed on the asphalt, David watched from the diner’s rooftop. The Blackwoods had just lost their shield.
