Chapter 19 - The Ring

Julian returned to Boston on a crisp autumn evening. The leaves were turning gold and crimson, reminiscent of the day he had first truly seen Clara in the cemetery.
He walked into the estate and found Clara in the garden, helping Lily plant winter bulbs. Clara looked up, her face breaking into a radiant smile when she saw him. She stood up, wiping dirt from her jeans, and ran into his arms.
"You're back early," she said, kissing him deeply.
"I had no reason to linger," Julian smiled, brushing a stray lock of auburn hair from her face.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He didn't drop to one knee—his bad shoulder and his pride wouldn't allow it—but he opened the box to reveal a stunning, vintage diamond ring.
Clara gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

"Thirty years ago, I thought my life was over," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. "I built a cage of ice and money and dared anyone to try and break in. Then a little girl covered in blood shattered the lock, and her mother melted the bars. I don't deserve you, Clara. But I will spend the rest of my life trying to. Marry me."
Clara’s eyes filled with tears. She didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around his neck. "Yes. Yes, Julian. Always yes."
