Chapter 10 - The War Council

The estate was on total lockdown. Julian, with his shoulder bandaged and his arm in a sling, stood at the head of the massive mahogany table in his private study. His captains were gathered around, a map of Boston spread out before them.

"Ramon hit us in daylight," Silvio said, his face dark with fury. "He’s sending a message to the other families that you’re weak, Julian."

"Let them think what they want," Julian replied coldly. "Ramon’s strength is his aggression, but it’s also his weakness. He’s impulsive. Where is he operating from?"

"He’s moved his inner circle to an abandoned shipyard in South Boston," Dante pointed at the map. "Heated perimeter, heavily armed guards. It’s a fortress."

Julian studied the map. "Then we don't break in. We draw him out."

"How?"

"We hit his pride," Julian said. "Ramon uses the docks to smuggle his untraceable weapons. We burn the shipment tonight. When he comes out to inspect the damage, we take his head."

Clara stood in the doorway, listening to the men talk casually of murder and fire. She felt a chill run down her spine. Julian Vargas was a gentleman to her, a father figure to her daughter, but in this room, he was a warlord. She had to reconcile the man who wiped away her tears with the man who ordered executions.

Julian looked up, meeting her eyes across the room. He didn't hide his nature from her. He let her see the wolf. And God help her, Clara didn't want to run away.
