Chapter 7 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than thirty minutes.

It was the fastest verdict in the history of Chicago’s criminal courts.

When the foreman stood up, Victoria was trembling so hard she could barely stand.

“We find the defendant guilty of attempted murder in the first degree,” the foreman read loudly.

Victoria collapsed into her chair, sobbing hysterically as the handcuffs were slapped onto her wrists.

The judge looked down at her with absolutely no mercy in his eyes.

“Victoria Sinclair, you are a monster wrapped in expensive clothing.”

“I sentence you to forty-five years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary.”

“Without the possibility of early parole.”

The sound of the gavel hitting the wood was the sweetest sound I had ever heard.

They dragged her out of the courtroom while she screamed Arthur’s name, begging for a second chance.

Arthur simply turned his back on her and walked over to where Julian and I were standing.

He picked Julian up in one arm and offered his other hand to me.

“Let’s go home, kids,” Arthur smiled.

We walked out of the courthouse and into the bright, warm sunshine.

The nightmare was finally over, and the wicked witch was locked away forever.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't wondering where I was going to sleep that night.

I was exactly where I belonged.
