Chapter 4 - The Threat

Three days passed, and the mansion felt less like a scary fortress and more like a home.

Julian and I became completely inseparable.

We played video games in the massive media room and ate ice cream for breakfast.

For a few days, I almost forgot about the evil woman who had tried to end his life.

But the Sinclair family was not going down without a vicious fight.

Late one night, I woke up to the sound of breaking glass on the first floor.

My street instincts kicked in immediately, keeping my heart calm and my breathing silent.

I crept out of my luxurious bedroom and peered over the grand balcony.

Two men dressed entirely in black were creeping through the lower hallway.

They were holding suppressed pistols, moving with terrifying military precision.

They were not here to steal money; they were here to eliminate the only witnesses.

They were coming upstairs to find Julian and me.

I didn’t scream, because screaming got you killed in the dark alleys.

I sprinted silently down the carpeted hall into Julian’s room.

I clamped a hand over his mouth before he could wake up and shout.

“Shh,” I whispered into his ear. “Bad men are here.”

His eyes widened in terror, but he nodded slowly.

I dragged him out of his bed and pushed him into the hidden laundry chute in his closet.

“Slide down to the basement and lock yourself in the wine cellar,” I ordered.

“What about you?” he cried silently.

“I have to warn your dad.”

I closed the chute door just as the bedroom door handle began to turn.

I ducked under the massive king-sized bed, holding my breath until my lungs burned.

The men walked into the room, their boots sinking heavily into the carpet.

“The boy is gone,” one of them hissed.

Before they could check under the bed, the blaring sound of the estate’s panic alarm ripped through the house.
