Chapter 6 - The Courtroom

Two months later, the trial of the decade finally began.
The courthouse was surrounded by hundreds of reporters and flashing cameras.
Victoria sat at the defense table, looking pale, exhausted, and completely defeated.
She wore a cheap gray suit, a far cry from the designer silk she wore the night we met.
I sat in the front row between Arthur and Julian, wearing a beautiful blue dress.
When the prosecutor called my name to the witness stand, the entire courtroom fell silent.
I was terrified, but Arthur gave my hand one reassuring squeeze.
I walked up to the wooden stand, looking directly at the woman who had tried to kill my brother.
The defense lawyer stood up, sneering at me with complete disrespect.
“You are just a homeless street beggar, isn't that right, Maya?” he barked.
“Objection!” the prosecutor yelled.
But I didn't need the prosecutor to protect me.
“I was homeless,” I answered clearly into the microphone.
“But I am smart enough to know you don't leave a disabled boy in the freezing mud.”
The jury murmured in agreement, looking at Victoria with pure disgust.
“She pushed Julian down, kicked his crutches away, and told him she hoped he froze,” I continued.
Victoria suddenly stood up, her face twisting into an ugly mask of pure rage.
“He is a cripple!” she screamed at the top of her lungs, losing her mind entirely.
“He was ruining my life with Arthur, he deserved to be left in the dark!”
The courtroom erupted into absolute chaos at her accidental confession.

The judge slammed his gavel repeatedly, ordering the bailiffs to restrain her.
Arthur didn't even blink; he just stared at her with ultimate victory in his eyes.
