Chapter 18 - The Showdown in the Hall of Art

Inside the Gold Coast mansion, the formal grand foyer was a scene of terrifying psychological torture.
Dante Navarro sat casually on the edge of the polished mahogany dining table—the very table where Lily had painted her watercolor masterpiece three days ago. Around him stood six of his heavily armed mercenaries, their automatic weapons trained on the center of the room.
Kneeling on the marble floor in front of the table was Elena Flores. Her hands were zip-tied behind her back, her lip was split and bleeding where Riko had struck her when she refused to answer his questions, but her posture was rigid, her dark eyes burning with defiant, unbroken courage as she stared up at the Miami boss.
Standing a few feet away, holding a glass of Mateo’s vintage wine, was Camila. She looked down at Elena with a look of intoxicating, vindictive triumph.
"Is this really what broke the Don of Chicago?" Camila mocked, swirling her wine glass as she circled Elena. "Look at her, Dante. No jewelry, no breeding, just a stubborn little maid from 18th Street who thinks spreading her legs for a crime lord makes her a lady."
Elena spat a mouthful of blood onto the polished marble floor directly onto the toe of Camila’s designer shoe. "I’d rather be a maid from 18th Street than a lying whore who tries to trap a man with another guy's baby."
Camila’s face contorted in fury. She raised her hand to strike Elena across the face with her wine glass, but Dante caught her wrist, pushing her back with a lazy, annoyed gesture.
"Enough, Camila. We aren't here for catfights," Dante said, looking down at Elena with a calculating sneer. He checked his diamond watch. "Mateo’s SOS alarm went off twelve minutes ago. He’s tearing down the expressway right now. When he walks through those front doors, I want him to see his new little domestic fantasy shattered."
Dante turned to Riko, who was guarding the grand staircase leading to the second floor. "Did your men find the brat yet?"
"She’s locked in the second-floor bedroom at the end of the hall, Boss," Riko reported, gesturing upstairs. "She shoved a dresser against the door when the shooting started. We were waiting for your word to breach it."
Elena’s heart stopped. They hadn't reached Lily yet. Her daughter was still behind the locked bedroom door, terrified and alone, but alive.
"Don't touch her!" Elena screamed, struggling violently against her zip-ties, her eyes locking onto Dante’s. "She’s seven years old, Dante! She has nothing to do with your territory or your money! Let her go out the back door, and I’ll tell Mateo to give you whatever shipping docks you want! I swear to God I will make him give you the city!"
"I don't need you to make him give me the city, Elena," Dante smiled coldly, drawing a heavy silver revolver from his shoulder holster and pointing it directly at Elena’s forehead. "I'm going to take the city over his dead body. Riko! Go upstairs, kick that bedroom door in, and bring the girl down here by her hair. I want her kneeling right next to her mother when Mateo walks in."
"NO! PLEASE!" Elena shrieked, struggling frantically as Riko turned toward the stairs.
Before Riko could take a single step up the marble staircase, the front of the Gold Coast mansion literally exploded.
The three-ton armored Mercedes-Maybach did not stop in the driveway; Hector drove the massive vehicle straight through the heavy double oak front doors at fifty miles per hour. The reinforced doors shattered into firewood, the brick doorframe buckling as the Maybach surged into the grand foyer like a steel battering ram, crushing two of Dante’s mercenaries beneath its bumper and slamming into the mahogany dining table with a deafening, thunderous crash.

Before the smoke and flying splinters could even settle, the rear doors of the Maybach flew open.
Mateo Vargas stepped out onto his shattered marble floor, holding a pistol in each hand, his amber eyes burning with the wrath of a god of war.
