Chapter 16 - The Night of Betrayal

Two days passed in a state of high-tension siege. While Mateo’s shooting squads waged a relentless, underground war against Dante Navarro’s remaining safehouses across the West Side, the Gold Coast estate remained locked down under Level-One biometric security protocols.

It was Thursday night—the eve of the emergency sit-down Mateo had arranged with the neutral syndicate elders at the downtown harbor to formally negotiate Dante’s surrender or elimination. Mateo had left the estate at nine o’clock with Hector and twenty of his heaviest shooters, leaving a specialized defensive detail of fifteen men behind to guard Elena and Lily.

At ten-thirty, the house was quiet. Lily was asleep in her bedroom on the second floor, her prized watercolor brushes lined up neatly on her nightstand. Elena sat in the library below, trying to read a book, though her eyes constantly drifted toward the digital security monitors mounted on the wall.

Suddenly, the perimeter alarms didn't ring—they simply went dark.

On the wall monitor, the green indicator lights representing the outer wrought-iron gates, the infrared courtyard sensors, and the biometric door locks all flickered once, turned red, and then shut down completely, replaced by blank static screens.

In the hallway outside the library, Marco, the head of the night security detail, tapped his tactical radio. "Command desk, this is Marco. We just lost video feed on sectors four through eight. System glitch or hard override?"

Only static hissed through the radio.

Before Marco could draw his weapon, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion did not get kicked in—they clicked open smoothly from the outside, unlocked by someone entering the master digital passcodes into the exterior keypad.

Through the darkness of the front foyer stepped Camila. She wore a dark trench coat over her designer clothes, her face pale and twisted with a triumphant, malicious smile. In her hand, she held the high-level security fob she had secretly cloned six months ago when Mateo had trusted her with the keys to his empire.

Behind her poured twelve of Dante Navarro’s elite tactical mercenaries—heavily armed men wearing night-vision goggles and body armor, carrying suppressed automatic rifles.

"Kill the guards," Camila whispered to the mercenary captain, pointing toward the hallway where Marco was standing. "But leave the maid and the brat for Dante. He wants to be in the room when we call Mateo from his own phone."

The assault was silent, swift, and devastating. Marco and two Vargas guards were cut down by a synchronized burst of suppressed automatic fire before they could even scream a warning. The marble foyer became a slaughterhouse in seconds as Dante’s mercenaries systematically cleared the ground floor, using Camila’s intimate knowledge of the house's layout to bypass every internal alarm trigger.

In the library, Elena heard the muffled, unmistakable thud of suppressed gunfire and the heavy thud of bodies hitting the hardwood floor outside.

Her survival instincts, honed from years of living in rough neighborhoods, took over instantly. She didn't freeze, and she didn't scream. She slammed the heavy library door shut, threw the brass deadbolt, and sprinted across the room toward the hidden panel behind the bookcase—the reinforced biometric panic room Mateo had shown her how to operate on her very first night in the house.

She typed the five-digit emergency code into the keypad: L-I-L-Y-1.

The heavy tungsten-steel door slid open with a mechanical hiss. Elena turned, intending to sprint upstairs to grab her daughter from the second floor—only to see the library door handle violently shaking as Dante’s mercenaries began kicking against the heavy wood from the hallway.

"Open the door, little maid!" Riko’s guttural voice growled from the other side of the wood, followed by the sound of a shotgun blasting the brass lock to splinters.

Elena looked at the open panic room door, then at the splintering library door. If she tried to run upstairs now, she would be shot in the hallway before she reached the second landing. She had only one option left to save her daughter's life.

She pulled her cell phone from her pocket, hit the emergency SOS auto-dial to Mateo’s satellite phone, and shoved the device through the gap of the panic room door just as she hit the manual override switch on the wall.

As the heavy steel door of the vault began to slide shut, sealing the panic room from the outside world without her inside it, the library door blew open in a shower of splintered wood.

Riko and two mercenaries charged into the room, their guns leveled, just in time to see Elena Flores standing alone in the center of the Persian rug, her hands raised in the air, having intentionally locked herself outside the vault to draw their attention away from the second floor where her daughter was sleeping.
