Chapter 14 - The Strike on Warehouse Nine

Dante Navarro did not wait for the newspaper scandal to cool down. He knew that while Mateo was distracted managing the fallout with the New York Commission and protecting his new household, the Vargas perimeter defenses on the industrial docks would be stretched thin.
At two o’clock on Tuesday morning, beneath a heavy autumn rainstorm, a synchronized tactical strike hit Vargas Warehouse Nine on the South Side canal—the primary distribution hub for Mateo’s high-value electronic and automotive logistics.
It wasn't a standard turf raid designed to steal cargo; it was a demolition. Three cargo trucks packed with industrial incendiary explosives were driven through the security gates by Dante’s mercenaries and detonated inside the loading bays. The resulting blast shattered windows for three blocks and sent a column of fire roaring into the night sky, completely destroying twelve million dollars' worth of legitimate corporate inventory and killing four of Mateo’s night-shift security guards.
When Mateo arrived at the burning docks an hour later, surrounded by three tactical escort vehicles, the scene was a hellscape of flashing red fire engine lights, billowing black smoke, and the smell of burning fuel.
Hector walked through the ash toward Mateo, holding a heavy piece of twisted sheet metal retrieved from the main gate. Painted across the charred steel in glowing white spray paint was a message left by Dante’s hitmen before they detonated the trucks:
"WE BURN THE DOCKS TODAY. WE BURN THE GOLD COAST NURSERY TOMORROW. — D."
Mateo stared at the painted words, his face illuminated by the raging fires of Warehouse Nine. The thaw that Lily and Elena had brought to his heart vanished in an instant, replaced by the absolute, terrifying sub-zero ice of the crime lord who had conquered Chicago. Dante wasn't just challenging his territory anymore; he was threatening to murder a seven-year-old girl in her bed.
"Hector," Mateo said, his voice so quiet, so eerily calm that several nearby firefighters turned to look at him with instinctive dread.
"Yes, Boss?"
"Call in the West Side shooting squads. Activate the reserve armories in Little Italy," Mateo ordered, turning his back on the burning warehouse and walking toward his armored Maybach. "We are done playing defense. We are done issuing corporate warnings. I want every social club, every gambling den, and every apartment building owned by Dante Navarro or his associates in this city hit before sunrise."

"And Navarro himself?" Hector asked, loading a fresh magazine into his rifle.
"Leave Navarro alive if you find him," Mateo said, stepping into the Maybach, his amber eyes burning with hellfire. "I want to carve his heart out with my own hands."
