Chapter 17 - The Siege of the Gold Coast

At the downtown harbor terminal five miles away, the emergency sit-down was shattered before the first word of negotiation could be spoken.

Mateo sat at the head of a long steel table inside a secure maritime warehouse, flanked by Hector and the neutral Chicago syndicate elders, when his encrypted satellite phone vibrated on the table. The display read: EMERGENCY SOS — ESTATE VAULT TRIGGERED.

At the exact same second, Hector’s earpiece buzzed with a desperate, static-choked broadcast from the estate’s automated backup server: "Alert. Master security override detected. Perimeter breached by authorized fob holder: CAMILA. Six interior guards down. West wing compromised."

Mateo didn't say a single word to the elders. He stood up with such violent force that his heavy steel chair toppled backward onto the concrete floor. His amber eyes were wide, dilated with a pure, terrifying adrenaline that transformed him instantly from a calculating negotiator into a rabid apex predator.

"They used Camila's codes," Mateo roared, drawing his heavy customized Colt .45 from his holster as he sprinted toward the warehouse exit. "They’re inside the house! Move! MOVE!"

The twenty Vargas shooters didn't ask questions. They scrambled into their armored Maybachs and tactical SUVs, tires screaming and engines roaring as the heavy convoy blasted through the harbor gates, hitting the northbound expressway at over one hundred miles per hour.

In the rear of the lead Maybach, Mateo sat on the edge of his seat, his knuckles white as he gripped his pistol, his heart hammering against his ribs like a battering ram. He tried to call Elena’s phone over and over again, but the line only rang out into empty static—her phone was locked inside the tungsten vault where cellular signals couldn't penetrate.

"Hector! How long until we reach the gates?" Mateo demanded, his breathing ragged, his chest burning with the agonizing realization that his promise to Elena was currently being written in blood on his own floors.

"Seven minutes at this speed, Boss!" Hector shouted from the driver's seat, weaving the three-ton Maybach between highway traffic with terrifying precision, the police sirens of their escort vehicles screaming through the night. "We have the perimeter drone feed back online! Navarro has twelve men inside the mansion! His command vehicle is parked in the front driveway!"

"Don't stop at the gates," Mateo commanded, his voice dropping into a register so dark, so completely devoid of human warmth that Hector felt a chill run down his spine. "Ram the wrought-iron gates. Ram their command vehicle. When we hit the ground, we take no prisoners, Hector. Anyone who isn't Elena or Lily dies on my floor tonight."
