Chapter 13 - The Tabloid Poison

While peace reigned inside the Gold Coast fortress, outside on the streets of Chicago, Camila’s venom was spreading like wildfire.

On Sunday morning, the front page of the Chicago Chronicle’s society section ran a sensationalized, multi-page exposé under the headline: "THE SYNDICATE'S SECRET FAMILY: WHY THE CITY'S MOST POWERFUL BACHELOR REALLY BROKE HIS VOWS."

Accompanying the article was a high-resolution photograph taken by a long-lens paparazzi lens from across the street in Pilsen two days before Elena moved out. It showed Mateo standing on the sidewalk in his dark suit, his hand resting protectively on Elena Flores’s shoulder while Lily stood between them, holding his hand.

The article, fueled entirely by anonymous quotes from Camila and Dante Navarro’s operatives, painted a scandalous picture. It claimed that Mateo Vargas had been leading a double life for eight years, secretly maintaining a mistress and an illegitimate daughter in the slums of Pilsen while deceiving high society with his engagement to Camila. It painted Elena as a cunning, manipulative opportunist who had finally forced the crime lord to abandon his legitimate bride at the altar to install her in his Gold Coast mansion.

In the executive breakfast room of the estate, Mateo stared at the newspaper spread across the marble table, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles knotted in his cheeks.

"They’re calling her a whore, Hector," Mateo said, his voice disturbingly quiet, vibrating with lethal intent. "They’re putting Lily’s name in print. They’re branding a seven-year-old child as an illegitimate mob bastard for the whole city to read."

Hector stood by the window, his iPad buzzing with incoming calls from syndicate captains across the Midwest. "The Commission in New York is already calling, Boss. The older Dons don't care about your private life, but they care about public exposure. Having your picture on the front page of the Sunday paper with a child makes the entire organization look unstable. Several of our business partners on the transit board are threatening to delay the dock expansion vote until the scandal blows over."

"Let them delay it," Mateo growled, standing up and crumpling the newspaper in his fist—just as he had done with the paternity report in Lincoln Park two weeks ago. "I want the editor of the Chronicle contacted within the hour. Tell him if another word about Elena or Lily Flores appears in his paper, I will buy his publishing company, shut down his presses, and personally bankrupt his family."

Before Hector could nod, the dining room door opened, and Elena walked in holding a cup of coffee. Her eyes landed on the crumpled newspaper in Mateo’s hand, then shifted to his thunderous expression.

"What happened?" Elena asked quietly, setting her cup down. "Is it Dante?"

Mateo looked at her, his anger melting into profound guilt. He reached out, smoothing the crumpled paper out on the table so she could read the headline and see the photograph of herself and Lily.

Elena read the words slowly. She read the vicious quotes calling her a slum mistress, the speculation about Lily’s parentage, and the mockery of her cleaning uniform. Instead of bursting into tears or screaming, she simply closed her eyes, taking a deep, steadying breath.

"I knew this would happen," she whispered, opening her eyes to look at Mateo. "When you step into the light with someone like you, the shadows try to drag you down into the dirt."

"I will fix this, Elena," Mateo said, stepping close to her, his hands gripping her shoulders gently. "I will issue a public statement through my corporate attorneys. I will clear your name and make sure the whole city knows you are an honorable woman working for my enterprise."

"No," Elena said firmly, shaking her head. She reached up, her small, calloused hand resting against his jawline, her thumb tracing the faint scar near his chin. "Don't feed the monsters by arguing with them in the paper, Mateo. If you issue a statement, you just prove that they hit a nerve. Let them talk. They don't know who we are, and they don't know what happens inside these walls. All I care about is that Lily is safe when she goes to school tomorrow."

Mateo leaned his cheek into her warm palm, closing his eyes for a second as he absorbed her remarkable, resilient strength. "She will be safe, Elena. I’m doubling the escort detail to the academy. I'm riding in the car with her myself every morning from now on."
