Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Apple

Three days later, Julian was released on bail. His high-priced lawyers had argued that he "didn't understand the severity of the medical emergency."
I was moved to a private recovery suite, spending my days in the NICU holding my tiny miracles—Leo and Maya.
On the fourth morning, the door to my hospital room swung open, and Beatrice walked in, followed closely by Julian. They had bypassed security by claiming they were bringing me clean clothes.
Julian looked disheveled, but Beatrice looked as immaculate and arrogant as ever.
"Elena, darling," Beatrice cooed, though her eyes were cold. "This whole misunderstanding has gotten completely out of hand. Julian's reputation is taking a hit at the firm."
I didn't speak. I just slid my hand under my pillow and hit the record button on my phone.
"Elena, I'm sorry, okay?" Julian said, sounding more annoyed than apologetic. "But you know you have a low pain tolerance. How was I supposed to know you were actually in labor? You overreacted by calling the cops."
"I didn't call the cops, Julian," I said, my voice deadpan. "The paramedic who had to kick our door down to keep me from bleeding to death called them."
"Well, it's embarrassing," Beatrice snapped. "You need to drop the charges immediately. Tell them it was pregnancy hormones. Julian is the breadwinner. If he goes to jail, you and those... premature children... will have nothing."
"Nothing?" I asked quietly.
"We will cut you off, Elena," Julian threatened, leaning over my bed. "You signed a prenup. You get a fraction of the assets. If you ruin my life, I'll make sure you don't even get custody. Who do you think a judge will favor? A wealthy executive, or a hysterical housewife who almost killed her own kids by giving birth on a rug?"
The sheer audacity of his evil took my breath away. But I didn't break.
"Get out," I said evenly.
"Drop the charges, Elena. I'll be back tomorrow with the lawyer to sign the retraction," Julian ordered, turning on his heel and walking out with his mother.

I pulled my phone out from under the pillow and stopped the recording.
Checkmate.
