Chapter 10 - The New Dawn

One year later.

The twins' first birthday party was in full swing at the private park near our new estate. The sun was shining, and the sound of children laughing filled the air.

Leo and Maya were crawling over a massive pile of presents, perfectly healthy, vibrant, and happy.

I stood by the picnic table, cutting the cake. I had taken over the charitable wing of my family’s trust, dedicating my time to funding legal aid for victims of domestic and financial abuse. I was no longer a victim; I was an advocate.

"Need a hand with that?" a deep, familiar voice asked.

I looked up. Marcus, the paramedic who had saved my life, was standing there, holding a massive teddy bear. He was out of uniform, wearing jeans and a simple t-shirt, looking incredibly handsome.

We had kept in touch over the year. He had visited the twins, checked in on my recovery, and slowly, a beautiful friendship had blossomed into something much deeper.

"You always seem to show up right when I need rescuing," I laughed, handing him a knife to cut the cake.

"I don't think you need rescuing anymore, Elena," Marcus smiled, his eyes warm and sincere. "I think you're the strongest woman I've ever met."

He reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind my ear. The touch sent a thrill through my chest, entirely different from the fear Julian had instilled in me. This was safe. This was real.

I looked at my children, safe and loved. I looked at the man beside me, who had broken down a door to save us.

Julian and Beatrice thought they could leave me to die in the dark. But they forgot one crucial thing: you cannot bury a mother's instinct. You can only plant it. And when it grows, it will shatter the very foundation you stand on.

My nightmare was over. And my real life had finally begun.
