Chapter 2 - The Interrogation

Julian’s private study was lined with rare books and glowing embers in a stone fireplace.
He pointed to a plush leather sofa.
“Sit down,” he said softly.
Clara clutched the oversized jacket tighter around her chest.
“Mr. Sterling, I cannot pay for this uniform, and I desperately need my final paycheck.”
Julian poured a glass of amber liquid and set it on the table before her.
“I don't care about the uniform, Clara.”
He leaned against his oak desk, staring intently at her face.
“How did you get that scar on your back?”
Clara swallowed hard, her hand instinctively touching her shoulder.
“It was a long time ago, in a fire.”
Julian’s breath hitched in his throat.
“A cabin fire in the snowy mountains?” he asked, his voice cracking.
