Chapter 9 - The Confession

Clara was waiting for him in the master suite, pacing nervously with a first-aid kit in her hands.
The doctor had bandaged his shoulder, but Clara insisted on cleaning the smaller cuts on his face and hands.
Vincenzo sat on the edge of the massive bed, watching her with a heavy, unreadable expression.
She gently dabbed a cotton pad with antiseptic against a cut on his cheek, her touch incredibly tender.
"You could have died tonight, Vincenzo," she whispered, a tear finally escaping her eye.
Vincenzo reached up and gently wiped the tear away with his thumb.
"I have lived in the dark for a very long time, Clara," he said softly, his voice cracking with emotion.
"I thought I was completely dead inside after I lost my wife and daughter."
"But then a brave little girl walked into a forbidden room, and her beautiful mother walked into my life."
Clara stopped cleaning his wounds, her heart fluttering wildly at his profound confession.
"I love you, Clara," he finally admitted, the words raw and honest.
"But tonight proved that my world is a very dark and dangerous place."
"If you want to take Elena and leave Chicago tomorrow, I will give you enough money to disappear safely."
He looked away, terrified of the answer, bracing himself for the rejection he felt he deserved.
Clara gently grabbed his chin, forcing him to look back into her tear-filled eyes.
"I have spent my entire life running from fear and struggling to survive," she told him fiercely.
"I am not running away from the only man who has ever truly made me feel safe."
She leaned down and pressed her lips against his, pouring all her fear, relief, and love into the kiss.
