Chapter 6 - The Betrayal

The shrill wail of the perimeter breach alarm echoed through the massive halls, shattering the peaceful afternoon.
Vincenzo’s romantic vulnerability vanished instantly, replaced by the deadly instincts of a mafia boss.
He pulled a sleek silver pistol from his shoulder holster and grabbed Clara’s arm.
"Take Elena and get into the basement safe room, right now," he commanded, his eyes completely devoid of warmth.
Clara scooped up the terrified little girl, abandoning the paints on the floor as they sprinted down the corridor.
Vincenzo ran toward the security command center, his mind racing to calculate how the Romanos could have bypassed the outer gates.
When he kicked open the doors to the surveillance room, he found three of his loyal guards lying dead on the floor.
Standing over the control panels, disabling the final security grid, was his underboss, Marco.
"What the hell are you doing, Marco?" Vincenzo roared, raising his weapon.
Marco turned around, a bitter, arrogant sneer twisted across his face.
"I am saving our syndicate from your weakness, Vincenzo," Marco spat, kicking a dead guard out of his way.
"You let a maid and her brat soften you, making us look like fools to the other families!"
"So you sold us out to the Romanos?" Vincenzo asked, his voice deadly quiet, betraying the hurricane of rage inside him.
"They promised me the north side territory if I opened the front gates for their hit squad," Marco laughed coldly.
"They are already in the courtyard, Vincenzo, it's over for you and your new little family."
Vincenzo didn't hesitate or offer a villainous monologue in response.
He simply pulled the trigger, putting a single bullet perfectly between Marco's eyes.
The traitor collapsed to the floor like a puppet with cut strings, his betrayal ending in an instant.

But Marco was right about one thing; the Romano hit squad had breached the mansion.
Vincenzo reloaded his weapon, stepping out into the grand foyer to face a war inside his own home.
