Chapter 1 - The Arrangement

Vincenzo stepped out of the shadows of the hallway and into the warm glow of the estate's massive kitchen.

Marta immediately stood up, bowing her head in quiet respect before slipping out the back door to give them privacy.

Clara instinctively pulled Elena closer to her chest, her breathing shallow and erratic as the crime boss approached.

Vincenzo did not look like the ruthless monster the Chicago underground feared.

He looked like a man who had just been shattered and painstakingly glued back together.

He pulled out a heavy wooden chair and sat directly across from the terrified mother.

"You need a safe place to stay, and your daughter needs her asthma medication," Vincenzo stated, his voice stripped of its usual commanding edge.

Clara swallowed hard, her pride battling fiercely against her desperate reality.

"I don't accept charity, Mr. Rossi," she whispered, her hands trembling as she held her child.

"This isn't charity," he replied, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath catch.

"You will become the head of this household staff, with a salary that reflects the danger of living under my roof."

"Elena will have the best pediatric specialists in Chicago, and her safety will be my personal responsibility from this day forward."

Clara looked down at her daughter, who was happily munching on a chocolate-chip scone, entirely oblivious to the gravity of the moment.

She thought about the freezing studio apartment, the unpaid bills, and the terrifying sound of Elena wheezing in the middle of the night.

"Why are you doing this for us?" Clara asked, a single tear slipping down her cheek.

Vincenzo looked at the little girl, a ghost of a sad smile touching his hardened lips.

"Because she gave my Mia her sky back."

"And I always protect those who heal my family."

Clara closed her eyes, the weight of years of struggling finally lifting off her tired shoulders.

"Okay," she breathed out, surrendering to the dangerous salvation he offered.

"We will stay."

Vincenzo nodded once, pulling a sleek black smartphone from his tailored suit jacket.

He dialed a number and pressed the phone to his ear, his demeanor instantly shifting back to the untouchable boss.

"Send my private physician to the estate immediately with a full supply of pediatric asthma medication," he ordered the person on the other line.

He hung up and looked back at Clara, making a silent vow that no harm would ever come to the woman and child sitting at his table.
