Chapter 5 - The Masterpiece

For the next two weeks, the estate was completely sealed off from the outside world.

While Vincenzo managed a brutal, unseen war from his study, Clara did her best to keep Elena's life normal and happy.

One rainy afternoon, Elena tugged on Vincenzo's expensive suit jacket as he walked through the parlor.

"Mr. Boss," she said, using the adorable nickname she had invented for him.

Vincenzo immediately stopped, crouching down to her eye level despite the urgent meeting he was headed to.

"Yes, little bird?" he asked, a rare, genuine smile appearing on his face.

"Can I go back to the special room?" she asked innocently. "The birds are lonely again."

Vincenzo froze, the painful memories of his late daughter threatening to surface.

He looked up at Clara, who was standing nearby with an apologetic expression on her face.

But then he looked back at Elena's hopeful eyes and felt the ice around his heart melt entirely.

"Yes, you may," he said softly, standing up and taking her tiny hand in his.

He led Elena and Clara down the forbidden hallway, unlocking the heavy door to Mia's old room.

Elena immediately ran to her paints, while Vincenzo stood in the doorway beside Clara.

They watched in comfortable silence as the little girl meticulously added bright yellow flowers to the bottom of the mural.

"She has a beautiful soul," Vincenzo murmured, his shoulder lightly brushing against Clara's.

"She brings light wherever she goes," Clara agreed, feeling a profound sense of peace standing next to him.

Vincenzo turned to look at Clara, his gaze dropping briefly to her lips before meeting her eyes.

"You brought light into a house that has been dark for seven years, Clara," he confessed in a low, husky voice.

Clara's breath hitched, the undeniable chemistry between them suddenly crackling in the quiet air of the room.

She slowly reached out and rested her hand against his chest, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart.

He leaned in, the space between them evaporating, until the soft chime of the estate's security alarm broke the moment.
