Chapter 20 - Full Circle

That evening, a sleek black sedan pulled up beneath a desolate overpass in Queens.
Elara stepped out of the car, wearing a tailored cashmere coat. She walked toward a rusted oil drum where a weak fire was flickering in the night.
Arthur looked up, his patchy gray beard blowing in the breeze. He squinted at her, his eyes widening in recognition. "Well, I'll be damned. You kept your toes attached."
Elara smiled, tears prickling her eyes. "I kept all of them. Thanks to you."
She handed him a thick, unmarked envelope. "There’s enough in there to buy a house, Arthur. And a car. And a lifetime supply of good tea."
Arthur looked at the envelope, then back at her. "I told you, freezing weather makes people emotional."
"Take it," Cassian said, stepping out of the shadows behind Elara. His presence was imposing, but his tone held deep, genuine respect. "She wouldn't be here if it weren't for you. And if she wasn't here, I would be dead. Consider it a debt paid."

Arthur slowly took the envelope, giving them a solemn nod.
Elara turned and walked back to the car, slipping her hand into Cassian's. As they drove away, leaving the dark underpass behind, Elara looked out at the glittering skyline of New York City. She had been thrown away into the darkest, coldest corner of the earth, but she had fought her way out, claiming not just her survival, but a king, a family, and an empire of her own.
