Chapter 16 - An Unexpected Offer

A week later, the snow had melted, giving way to a crisp, bright New York morning. Elara was sitting in her small kitchen, sipping coffee, when a black sedan pulled up outside her window.
She walked downstairs to find Cassian leaning against the hood of the car, looking effortlessly intimidating in a dark tailored suit.
"You didn't have to come in person," Elara said, crossing her arms against the chill. "Your accountants already transferred the remaining funds for Lily's treatment into my account. Our deal is done."
Cassian looked at her, his dark eyes unreadable. "The deal is done. But I have a new proposition."
"I'm not going back to bartending at the Obsidian," Elara scoffed.
"I'm not asking you to." Cassian stepped closer, invading her personal space in a way that made her heart flutter dangerously. "Silas left a massive void in my organization. I need someone to manage the legitimate side of my real estate and casino operations. Someone who sees the numbers, who doesn't miss a single discrepancy."

Elara stared at him. "You want me to be your Chief Financial Officer?"
"I want you to be my partner," Cassian corrected, his voice dropping an octave. "I trust you, Elara. More than I have trusted anyone in a very long time."
