Chapter 1 - The Unseen Shield

Rosa froze in the doorway, her heart slamming against her ribs like a trapped bird.

She watched in absolute horror as her deaf daughter stood inches away from the deadliest man in New York.

Alessandro Moretti did not yell, nor did he reach for the weapon hidden beneath his tailored jacket.

Instead, his dark eyes shifted from the tiny girl signing to the terrified mother trembling in the shadows.

With deliberate calmness, he placed the poisoned crystal goblet onto a nearby silver tray.

He raised his hands again, his fingers moving with a rusty but undeniable grace.

"You are safe," he signed to the little girl, offering a rare, genuine smile.

He then looked at Rosa, his expression instantly hardening back into the mask of a ruthless syndicate boss.

He gestured for her to come forward, stepping out of the line of sight from the grand ballroom.

Rosa hurried to her daughter, scooping Lily into her arms and burying her face in the girl's soft curls.

"I am so sorry, sir," Rosa whispered, tears spilling down her pale cheeks.

"She did not mean to intrude, we will leave immediately."

Alessandro held up a single, commanding hand to stop her frantic apologies.

"She just saved my life," he replied, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that barely carried over the music.

"If what she says is true, my fiancé and my best friend are currently waiting for me to die."

He looked down at the little girl, who was now clutching her worn stuffed rabbit against her mother’s shoulder.

"Your husband was Miguel Delgado, wasn't he?" Alessandro asked, his sharp memory putting the pieces together.

Rosa gasped, nodding slowly as fear and confusion swirled in her chest.

"He was a good man, a loyal worker at the docks," Alessandro stated softly.

"Take your daughter and go to my private office on the third floor."

He pulled a heavy brass key from his pocket and pressed it into Rosa’s trembling hand.

"Lock the door from the inside and do not open it for anyone except me."

Rosa knew better than to argue with the head of the Moretti family.

She nodded, clutching the key tightly before rushing up the hidden servants' staircase.

Alessandro took a deep breath, straightening his tie and preparing to face the vipers in his own house.
