Chapter 8 - The Verdict of the Century

Judge Harrison cleared her throat, blinking rapidly to clear the unexpected moisture from her own eyes.
She turned her attention back to the trembling prosecutor.
"Mr. Sterling," the judge said, her voice dripping with absolute contempt.
"You and your co-conspirators are going to spend a very long time reflecting on the audacity of your crimes."
"Bail is revoked permanently."
"Federal marshals, take Mr. Sterling into custody immediately."
Before Marcus could utter another word, two armed bailiffs stepped behind him, placed heavy handcuffs around his wrists, and hauled him out of the courtroom through the side doors.
Judge Harrison looked down at the defense table, where Robert the public defender sat grinning from ear to ear.
"Mr. Vance," the judge addressed David formally.
"In light of the overwhelming digital evidence presented by your brother, and the complete collapse of the state's fabricated case, this court is dismissing all charges against you with prejudice."
She slammed her gavel down one final time.
"You are a free man."
The courtroom erupted into thunderous applause, ignoring all protocol as spectators stood up to witness the incredible conclusion of a trial that had nearly destroyed an innocent family.
David didn't wait for the applause to die down.
He rushed around the defense table, pushing through the swinging gate, and sprinted down the aisle toward Sarah and Toby.

He scooped them both into his arms, holding his family tighter than he ever had in his entire life.
The nightmare was finally over.
