Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

The sun dipped slowly below the horizon, painting the Wisconsin sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold.

Sarah walked up the porch steps, wiping a light sheen of sweat from her forehead, and sat down in the rocking chair right next to David.

She leaned her head against his shoulder, her hand resting comfortably over his.

"Penny for your thoughts?" Sarah asked softly, looking out over the peaceful landscape.

David wrapped his arm around her, pulling her close as he watched Toby run inside to grab a glass of lemonade.

"I was just thinking about that courtroom," David murmured, his voice laced with quiet wonder.

"About how close we came to losing everything."

Sarah sighed, turning her face to look into his eyes.

"We didn't lose anything, David," she reminded him gently, her voice firm with conviction.

"We lost the illusion that the world is always fair, yes."

"But we found out how strong we really are."

"And we found out that heroes sometimes come in small packages carrying a black tablet."

David smiled, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of his wife's head.

"You're right," he agreed.

"The truth always finds a way out, no matter how deep tyrants try to bury it."

From inside the kitchen, they heard Toby singing a cheerful, made-up tune as he poured his drink.

The past was behind them, a dark chapter closed forever by a family that refused to break.

The future stretched out before them, bright, unburdened, and entirely secure.

They had walked through the fire and emerged unbroken, ready to face whatever dawn brought next.
