Chapter 2 - The Device on the Bench

The silence that fell over the chamber was absolute, heavy enough to make breathing sound like an intrusion.

Judge Harrison leaned forward intently, her sharp eyes fixed on the small boy standing at the base of the towering mahogany bench.

Toby did not speak.

He simply reached out his small hands and placed the black tablet squarely on the polished wood of the judge's desk.

The lead prosecutor, Marcus Sterling, abruptly turned pale, the smug color draining entirely from his face as his eyes locked onto the device.

Robert, the defense attorney, dropped his silver pen mid-sentence, the metallic clatter echoing loudly off the floorboards.

David turned his head sharply, staring in stunned disbelief at his son.

Where had Toby gotten that tablet?

The federal search warrants had stripped their home bare months ago; every laptop, phone, and hard drive had been seized and scoured by digital forensics.

Yet here was a device that had somehow slipped through the cracks of the most rigorous federal investigation in the state's history.

Judge Harrison reached out cautiously, her gloved finger tapping the screen to wake it from sleep mode.

A security passcode prompt appeared immediately.

"Whose device is this, young man?" Judge Harrison asked, her voice softening significantly, losing the stern judicial edge it had held all morning.

Toby did not answer with words.

Instead, he reached into the front pocket of his oversized sweater, pulled out a small, handwritten slip of paper, and laid it beside the tablet.

Judge Harrison picked up the note, unfolding it slowly.

As her eyes scanned the handwritten lines, her breath caught audibly in her throat.

Her gaze snapped instantly away from the boy and locked directly onto the prosecution table, where Marcus Sterling was suddenly sweating profusely under his collar.

"Your Honor," Marcus protested loudly, standing up so fast his chair screeched against the floor.

"This is an absurd circus! A minor child is being used to introduce unverified, unvetted digital media outside of standard discovery protocols! I move for an immediate mistrial or contempt charges!"

"Sit down, Mr. Sterling," Judge Harrison commanded, her voice dropping an octave into a tone of pure, unadulterated ice.

"You will remain silent until I address you."

The prosecutor swallowed hard, sinking slowly back into his leather chair, his hands visibly shaking as he gripped the edge of the table.

The carefully constructed narrative of guilt that the state had spent months manufacturing was beginning to fracture right before his eyes.
