Chapter 7 - The Final Piece of the Puzzle

Judge Harrison listened intently, her expression serious as she processed the extraordinary confession.

"And why involve a seven-year-old child in a high-stakes federal espionage maneuver, Mr. Vance?" the judge asked, glancing down at Toby with deep maternal concern.

Julian smiled softly, looking down at his nephew.

"Because the federal marshals searched my apartment three days ago, suspecting I was poking around where I shouldn't have been," Julian explained.

"They confiscated my laptops, my phones, and my flash drives."

"I knew they wouldn't search a traumatized seven-year-old boy who hadn't spoken a word and clutched a stuffed animal everywhere he went."

"I slipped the tablet into Toby's backpack yesterday morning before the trial started, whispering only one instruction: Take this to the lady in the big black robe when the bad men finish talking."

A collective wave of emotional realization swept through the courtroom.

Toby hadn't lost his voice because of a medical condition; he had been holding onto a dangerous secret, protecting his father the only way a terrified, brilliant little boy knew how.

Sarah Vance burst into fresh tears, but this time they were tears of overwhelming relief.

She stood up from her seat, rushed down the aisle, and swept Toby up into her arms, burying her face in his hair as she hugged him fiercely.

Toby wrapped his small arms around his mother's neck, burying his face in her shoulder.

Then, for the first time in six agonizing months, the little boy spoke out loud.

"Is daddy coming home now, Mommy?" Toby whispered, his sweet voice carrying clearly across the quiet room.

Sarah kissed his cheek repeatedly, unable to speak through her joyous sobs.

David gripped the edge of the defense table so hard his knuckles turned completely white, fighting back tears of his own as he looked at his wife and son.
